Have you been wondering what the big red celtic knot is doing in the sky of the SDCCS2018 logo? Is it a sun, a flower, or just a celtic knot?
The logo for SDCCS 2018 embodies the spirit of the event and Calgary, with an energetic young dancer performing skillfully at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The highland dancer’s gaze is directed upwards towards a celtic knot, signifying a stylized version of the Wild Alberta Rose. In the background you can see a representation of a view of the foothills from the North-West corner of Calgary (yep, you can see the Mountains from Calgary – they are only an hour away!).
Referencing good-old Wikipedia, “Foothills are geographically defined as gradual increases in elevation at the base of a mountain range. In terms of elevation, it is opposite to a peak (summit)”1.
So, the foothills in the image not only represent a view that can be seen from many areas of Calgary, but also the jumping elevation of the dancer and the underlying continual upward quest of all dancers to their peak performance as they elevate to excellence at SDCCS2018!
